Pittsburgh — The Paws to Recycle campaign, an aluminum can recycling program designed to encourage recycling and benefit animal shelters throughout the country, is kicking off its 9th year by challenging communities and shelters to raise the program’s total to $3 million.

Every year, Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Inc., the American Humane Society, Washington, D.C., and St. Louis-based Purina PetCare supply animal shelters with tools and resources to conduct aluminum can drives from September through November. The cans are collected and recycled, and receipts from sales are tallied. At the end of the program, shelters keep the money raised through their recycling efforts and are eligible to win Paws to Recycle prizes.

More than 100 shelters participated in the program last year. Since it began, the program has diverted more than 248 million cans from landfills, while raising more than $2.5 million for animal shelters nationwide.
