Commissioners in Morgan County, Ind. have voted to pause the county’s recycling program, ahead of plans to end the program all together at the end of September.

This decision comes after concerns of dumping trash and the increase of fees.

The board met earlier this week where Commissioner Bryan Collier claimed that the current program is “out of control.” He continued to say that the Martinsville and Mooresville locations are being used by residents to dump trash. Pictures were shown to the commissioners of trash that had been left at the Martinsville site, which included trashed mattresses.

With the company that provided recycling to the area being sold and the looming increased costs for removing recycling materials led to the decision to pause the program. The county was paying close to $200 per recycling bin to have recycled materials removed. The new company taking over the area will be charging upwards of $600 per bin.

Erick Kivett, recycling director, estimates that the recycling program alone may cost the county roughly $600,000 in 2024. To finish out the year, Kivett requested an additional $110,00 from the council. The board approved allowing Kivett to apply for a grant of up to $100,000 from the state, which will help fund a recycling program.
