The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $4 million to the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency (DMASWA) in Iowa to improve battery recycling in the area.

The grant money will work to expand battery recycling and make it easy for area customers to use. DMASWA will build a new battery recycling hub inside its new customer convenience center at the Dubuque Metro Landfill, slated to begin work early next year.

A quarter of the new facility will be solely for battery collection and processing, where thereafter the batteries will be sent off for metal extraction and for recycling.
