Leaders in Washington D.C. are introducing a new bottle bill, hoping to reduce litter and improve recycling rates by incentivizing consumers.

The bottle bill dubbed the Recycling Refund and Litter Reduction Amendment Act of 2025, was introduced by Ward 1 council member Brianna Nadeau. So far, the bill has the support of 10 fellow council members.

The bill would see consumers pay a 10-cent deposit on beverage bottles and cans. After returning the bottles or cans, consumers would get those 10 cents back.

"It’s going to be a great opportunity for residents. I think they’ll see pretty quickly that it’s a way to earn money. Word gets out pretty fast when something becomes valuable and redeemable," said Councilmember Nadeau.
