Birmingham, Ala. city leaders a set to apply for millions in grant money to fund local recycling programs around the city and at local schools.

ABC 33/40 News is reporting that the city is expected to approve applying for a grant with the EPA’s Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling grant program for up to $5 million. The city will use the money to roll out RFID-enabled recycling bins to neighborhoods which will help city managers plan routes to reduce fuel usage and improve collection efficiency.

Additionally, a portion of the grant money will be used to establish school-based recycling programs in Birmingham City Schools.
