Staples Canada Inc. said has exceeded many of its 2013 sustainability goals by collecting 93,274 kilograms (205,203 pounds) of batteries and 3.08 million ink and toner cartridges.

The Richmond Hill, Ontario-based retailer also said in a news release it has collected 3,366 metric tons of electronics in 2013, through nearly 260 retail locations (with nine added last year).

Staples partners with Call2Recyle to collect and recycle batteries and passed its goal of 60,000 kilograms, nearly doubling the amount recycled in 2012.

With ink and toner cartridge drop-off options at every Canadian store, Staples surpassed its recycling goal of 5.07 million for that product.

It partners with eCycle Solutions to recycle electronics, and surpassed its goal of matching its 2012 collection of 3,000 metric tons.

Partnering with TerraCycle and Newell Rubbermaid, Staples collected 26,643 units of writing instruments in Canada in 2013.
