Sonoco Recycling Facility Diverts 95 Percent of Landfill Waste

Article-Sonoco Recycling Facility Diverts 95 Percent of Landfill Waste

Sonoco Recycling LLC said its CorrFlex facility in Rural Hall, N.C., has diverted 95 percent of its waste from landfills.

The Hartsville, S.C.-based package recycling company said in a news release that last September employees at the fulfillment facility set a goal of achieving landfill-free status in two years, and formed a Team Green to reach the target. As a fulfillment facility the material mix frequently changes with customers, which presented a challenge. The team tracked landfill and recycling tonnage and monitored dumpster contents.

The plant’s temporary and multilingual work force represented another challenge, but bilingual container labeling helped on that front, Sonoco said. The employees also reused articles that are difficult or impossible to recycle.

The facility achieved the 95-percent level through a combination of recycling, reuse and waste-to-energy, the company said.
