Providence, R. I., Starts Small Business Recycling Program

Providence, R.I., has launched a small business recycling program.

Mayor Angel Taveras and the Hope Street Merchants Association began the “Big Green Can for Business” recycling pilot program. Nineteen small businesses are participating in the program, an extension of an existing residential initiative, according to a city news release.

The city’s Office of Sustainability worked with the merchants association to develop the program, and expectations are that it will expand to other parts of the city. Participating businesses are charged $50 for the Big Green Can and receive free weekly collection service.

“We are excited to launch this recycling program and work with local businesses to make it easy to be green,” said Sheila Dormody, director of the Office of Sustainability.
