Covanta Releases Emissions Data for its Miami-Dade Facility

Covanta, a leader in sustainable materials management, has announced that the emissions data for its Miami-Dade County Resources Recovery Facility in Doral, Fla. is now available to the public.

“With this information now at the ready on the facility’s website, the Miami-Dade community is given an unfettered virtual seat into the control room to view the very same data that operators use to monitor operational performance at the Waste-to-Energy facility,” notes the press release.

Continuous emissions monitoring helps to determine a Waste-to-Energy facility’s compliance with the strict emission limits established in its operating permit, in accordance with the federal Clean Air Act and Florida’s strict regulatory requirements. “The Dade facility has been consistently recognized for exceptional operations, including OSHA’s stringent Voluntary Protection Program Star certification, and operates below the established permit’s emission limits.”

The Covanta Dade facility processes 1,000,000 tons of waste per year, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 593,000 tons (equivalent to taking 116,000 passenger vehicles off the road). After recyclables are removed, the remaining waste is converted into electricity for local homes and businesses—enough continuous electricity to power 25,000 homes for one year. “We hope the public comes to appreciate the positive contributions of Waste-to-Energy technology in terms of mitigating global warming, increasing recycling, and moving us toward our climate goals,” said Tequila Smith of Covanta.
