The New York City Department of Sanitation continues to transport record-busting volumes of garbage as residents continue to work and go to school from home. In the first eight months of the year, the department collected 4.2 percent more household garbage, recycling and organic waste than last year.

However, the department continues to suffer problems with missed pickups due to pandemic-response truck schedules. The number of missed collection complaints rose by about 50 percent to 5,244 in August from the same period a year earlier.

There is one possible explanation for the growth in complaint calls. The Department of Sanitation has changed the timing of garbage pickups. They started to collect trash after midnight and early in the morning to ensure sanitation workers could avoid contact with the public, due to COVID-19.

The majority of the complaints from residents are from Brooklyn and Queens.

The Department of Sanitation could also see additional problems with their waste removal as budget cuts could be coming in the near future.
