At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Republic Services showed off its solution to keeping lithium-ion batteries from getting into and causing damage to facilities.

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Republic Services showed off its solution to keeping lithium-ion batteries from getting into and causing damage to facilities.

At the trade show, Republic Services showcases a state-of-the-art waste collection truck built by Oshkosh that screens collected materials for batteries. The truck, weighing more than 41,000 pounds, can carry nine tons of materials, is fully electric, and is equipped with AI software capable of scanning through waste and recycling loads. This technology allows drivers to flag collections containing batteries before the hazardous material reaches recycling facilities.

"A couple of recycling centers burn down every year," said Jon Vander Ark, chief executive of waste management company Republic Services. “Getting [batteries] out of the stream is of huge value to us.”
