Article-Hertz, Liberty Tire Launch Tire Recycling Program

Hertz Corp. and Liberty Tire Recycling have launched the first nationwide tire recycling program in the U.S. car rental industry.

The Parkridge, N.J.-based Hertz said in a news release that Liberty Tire Recycling, of Pittsburgh, will collect its used tires, which total 160,000 annually, into a wide range of products, including mulch, mats and playground safety surfacing, railroad tracks and rubberized asphalt.

“We take the next step forward and launch the first zero landfill waste tire program in the industry," said Mark Frissora, Hertz chairman and CEO.

Liberty Tire is a leading tire recycler in North America, recycling more than 140million tires annually and reclaiming about 1.5 billion pounds of rubber for environmentally friendly products.
