Home to more than 108,000 sustainability-inclined residents and 10,000 businesses, Boulder is a pioneer when it comes to environmental and sustainable policies.

Boulder has a vision to become a zero-waste community, with a goal of 85 percent diversion by 2025.

Boulder’s zero-waste story is tied closely with the nonprofit Eco-Cycle.

Boulder’s success is based on five lessons for other cities:

  1. Set community goals and enforce them

  2. Engage in nonprofit, private sector and local government partnerships

  3. Create and composting facilities and programs

  4. Adopt a zero-waste policy for all homeowners, property managers, businesses and public events

  5. Offer public education to drive behavior and a change in the culture

From statewide legislation to banning single-use plastics, Boulder continues to innovate with regard to zero-waste.
