Sustainability Matters welcomed guests on a tour of its "Making Trash Bloom" initiative, which includes plotting plants for pollination and wildlife.

Members from the board of directors of the Virginia Recycling Association recently joined a handful of others to look at the work that the Sustainability Matters organization has done with Shenandoah County landfills. Sustainability Matters is currently working to cover portion of the area’s landfills with native pollinator and wildlife habitats.

Sari Carp, executive director of Sustainability Matters, was on site to lead the group to observe the work it had done since it first started in 2019 with its “Making Trash Bloom” program. This began with installing a 20-by-100-foot plot of butterfly friendly plants in an area of the landfill near the entrance.

The plants first started growing in 2020 and according to Carp, the plants will do well in warmer months without any fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, and will attract butterflies and even toads.
