Tonawanda, NY-based River Road Research has secured a patent for proprietary technology to convert food waste to raise black soldier flies.

The company, which was founded in 2010, focuses on biotechnology development. Black soldier flies are used as feed for "fish and animals that feed on non-sustainable sources."

River Road Research is opening a manufacturing facility in Buffalo, NY to support the effort.
