A French company has sold more than 1.5 million hemp face masks since first releasing them in March.

The product has not yet arrived in the United States, but European and Canadian residents have been able to purchase the biodegradable product.

Geochanvre, the makers of the hemp face mask, are manufacturing the single-use gear to reduce plastic waste that ends up in the ocean.

Single-use masks normally are comprised of polypropylene, polythene and vinyl, which could take up to 450 years to decompose. The hemp masks are compostable after use.
