Research shows that less than one-third of plastics are reworkable and only 8.4 percent of all plastics find a new life.

For many years, the U.S. shipped its plastic to China. Now that China has banished all rubbish imports, the U.S. is trying to stay ahead of plastic recycling through automation. But with 262 million tons a year, that’s no easy feat.

With such grim statistics, another option is for people to create less waste and use long lasting items instead of single use items.
