James Watt and Martin Dickie founded craft-brewing company BrewDog in Scotland, in 2007—and today, it claims to be the world’s largest craft brewer. From the start, the brand has been known for its punk-rock sensibility and irreverence. But now it’s also becoming known for its ambitious sustainability initiatives.

In July, the business launched its official sustainability program, known as BrewDog Tomorrow, with a mission of making the company the most sustainable drinks brand on the planet.

The company has already achieved several sustainability wins. Notably, this August, the brewer announced it had reached carbon-negative status, making it the first international beer business to do so. All of its spent grain is being turned into biogas, and the company is “working with local partners to turn used malted barley into gas, vehicle fuel and organic fertilizers.”

Some of its additional plans include: converting to wind power in all of its facilities around the world; investing in fully electric delivery trucks; and reducing the distance its beer has to travel. The company has also introduced a unique program that allows staff to “calculate their personal carbon footprint using a mobile app…[and] once the calculations have been done for all 2,000 employees, BrewDog will then remove twice as much carbon from the air each year as each staff member is responsible for.”

Some of this sustainability work will be paid for via the company’s Equity for Punks Tomorrow crowdfunding initiative, “a unique way to get customers excited about sustainability while taking a stake in the business,” which so far has 150,000 participants.

Said CEO Jason Block, “Every decision we make moving forward will be with sustainability in mind. We’re making sure we have a planet to brew on.”
