Residents of Baltimore County, Md. are indirectly powering their homes with the very waste from their trash cans.

Energy Power Partners, a company focused on renewable energy sources, is collecting gas from the Eastern Sanitary Landfill in White Marsh, Md. to create electricity. The private equity firm will sell energy produced from methane gas to the county in order to "offset the needs of municipal facilities."

Estimated savings for Baltimore County versus going to another energy provider are $285,000.
