The Steel Recycling Institute (SRI) has a new leader, as Mark Thimons succeeds the retiring Gregory Crawford as vice president of the group.
The Washington-based Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) of the American Iron and Steel Institute made the appointment of Thimons, who joined SMDI in 2010 as director of construction sustainability. He has more than 25 years of experience in steel construction products and steel product sustainability, according to a news release.
“Under Greg’s leadership, the Steel Recycling Institute has driven increases in steel recycling rates while positioning the organization to take a lead role in steel sustainability in North America.,” said Lawrence Kavanagh, president of the SMDI. Mark’s particular expertise will ensure a smooth transition and enable the organization to focus on steel’s superior environmental performance versus competing materials.”
As part of the transition, Pitttsburgh-based SRI will focus its efforts in two core areas: recycling programs and life cycle research. The recycling focus will feature national and regional recycling initiatives, outreach and growth, while the lifecycle research will include life cycle assessment studies and other sustainability-related initiatives connected to the North American steel industry.
