In August, Pineham Lock in Northampton had unwelcome guests. They were on private land, and they dumped a lot of waste including mattresses, freezers and ice cream fridges.

The unwelcomed guests left after being served an eviction notice in October, but the borough council said the costs of clean-up was the responsibility of the landowners, leaving landowners furious.

Landowner Nico Frantoni, who purchased his land with the intention of creating a nature reserve, said the group should be punished "for messing up our land and our lives.”
