The city of Springfield, Ohio denied a contract with Waste Management for collection services because city officials say they have toxic waste to clean up.

City Commissioner David Estrop says Waste Management owns Tremont Barrel Fill, a nearby 8.5 acre portion of a closed landfill that contains barrels of industrial waste.

A company spokesperson says that neither Waste Management or its affiliated companies owns the landfill in question. It is owned by Tremont Landfill Company. However, its subsidiary Chemical Waste Management is cooperating with the U.S. EPA to secure approval for the cleanup process.
