From 1958 to 1979, Florida State University conducted research on the effects of low-level radionuclides with the United States Atomic Energy Commission.

The university will begin to remove the low-level radioactive waste from the storage sites at the College of Engineering Innovation Park and Apalachicola National Forest.

The cost to remove the waste is estimated to be between $5 million and $7 million. The removal will begin at the College of Engineering Innovation Park in December and at the Apalachicola National Forest in 2021.
