Houston Wins $1 Million Award for Recycling Project

Houston has received $1 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies for its one-bin recycling system that aims to recycle 75 percent of all waste.

The city was one five city winners from the New York-based philanthropic organization in the Mayors Challenge, a competition to inspire American cities to solve major challenges and improve city life, according to a news release. The $1 million award is to supplement implementation of the projects.

Houston created a public-private partnership to combine existing technologies and develop the One Bin for All concept, a high-recycling rate system. Bloomberg recognized the city “for its huge leap forward in recycling/recovery and potentially transformative impact on cities’ sustainability practices.”
