Elsemere Canyon Saved from Becoming Landfill

Wendy Angel

Santa Clarita, Calif. – Browning Ferris Industries (BFI) has formally withdrawn its permit applications to make Elsemere Canyon a trash dump, ending a 15-year-long battle between the company and local residents. BFI, which owns about 1,200 acres of the canyon, conceded defeat in a letter dated May 5 but released Monday, May 17.

The City of Santa Clarita and the county manager fought to save Elsemere Canyon from the same fate as nearby Sunshine Canyon, where BFI currently operates a landfill.

The future of the 1,200 BFI-owned acres is still uncertain, according to City Councilwoman Marsha McLean.
