The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has officially closed the public comment period on whether the agency should pursue changes to the federal Hours of Service (HOS) rules for commercial truck drivers.
Across the waste and recycling industry, the consensus has been that the safety benefits that electronic logging devices (ELDs) present for other sectors are actually counterproductive for refuse fleets due to the increased risks associated with distracted driving. And the industry continues to seek an exemption to the ELD mandate.
But the mandate is in full effect, and there's still a handful of errors fleets and drivers are making with their ELDs that are causing avoidable headaches during roadside inspections.

Especially during this transitional period when ELDs and their older sibling, automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRDs), are still in use through December 2019, some common errors have cropped up around ELD use that are costing truck drivers and fleets valuable time. It can also lead to often unnecessary citations that'll have to be chased down and resolved.
According to Joe DeLorenzo, director of the Office of Compliance & Enforcement at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, some of these are pretty obvious little things that lead to disproportionate problems. So the good news is, it may not take a lot for drivers and their fleets to have a much better day.
