Republic Services Inc. has opened a landfill and transfer station in Texas to serve the Rio Grande Valley region.

The Phoenix-based Republic said in a news release that it opened the 2,037-acre La Gloria landfill in Edinburg, Texas, that has an estimated life of more than 100 years. It replaces the company’s Rio Grande Valley Landfill in Donna, Texas, that reached capacity.

The company also opened a transfer station in La Feria, Texas, that covers 14,000 square feet. Waste from the La Feria transfer station will be hauled to the La Gloria landfill.

Both the landfill and transfer station will accept material from residents, contractors and third-party waste haulers, as well as from Republic’s local operations. Permitted material includes municipal solid waste, liquids, green waste and special waste.

The site was under construction for one year and was built with integrated systems, technologies and processes to help ensure environmental protection.
