The Washington Nationals have installed "reverse vending machines" where fans can recycle cans and bottles, and once they do, they'll win a small prize.

The Washington Nationals are raising the bar when it comes to recycling in its baseball stadium, and now, new “reverse vending machines" are making it even easier for fans to help the team be more sustainable.

Recently, the Nationals revealed new machines that accept different recyclable items that fans can interact with. After a fan drops in a can, for example, they can earn a reward. Once the fan is done recycling their cans or bottles, the machine will give them a paper receipt or QR code, then the fan will win a small prize like a koozie or key chain, and one lucky fan per game will win tickets to a future Nationals game.

As well as the machines, there will be a new “Green Team” scouting the stands and offering to collect fan’s used cans and bottles to recycle for them.

Nationals Park is also now the nations first major professional stadium to become LEED Silver Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.
