Since 2021, four states have passed packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR) bills— California, Colorado, Maine and Oregon—and many other states have introduced EPR bills but have not been successful in getting them passed. These laws differ from state to state, and with so many states looking at EPR to address issues related to recycling and reduce the environmental impact of packaging and plastic, it’s no surprise that more bills will continue to be introduced in legislative sessions.
