Monroe County, Mich., seeks a $20,000 state grant to continue its scrap tire recycling efforts.

The county’s health department has been given the green light to apply for the grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to sustain a tire recycling program. The county has held tire collection events for nearly two decades and collected more than 105,000 tires since 2004, Monroe News reports.

Monroe County is seeking a $20,000 state grant to continue one of its more popular recycling efforts: scrap tires.

Tuesday night, county commissioners gave their nod to the county health department applying for the grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to sustain a tire recycling program that has helped keep tires out of area roadsides and ditches.

“This is one program that’s near and dear to me,” J. Henry Lievens, county board chairman, said. The county has held tire collection events for nearly two decades and collected more than 105,000 tires since 2004, he said.
