After a decade of preparation, Mexico City has enacted a ban on single-use containers, forks, straws and other such items.

The city's environmental secretary wrote on Twitter that “from today on Mexico City without single-use plastics.” The city is one of the world's largest with a population of nearly 9 million in the city proper, and more than 21.5 million in the metro area.

Officials passed the ban on single-use plastic items in 2019. The city ca now fine individuals using plastic bags and other single-use items. However, some residents have said that enforcement has been set aside as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
