A recycling center in Kihei, Hawaii had to call in a Maui Bomb squad after employees found an explosive device mixed in with other recyclables.

Upon getting to the site, the Hawaii Inter-Island Bomb Squad was told the device was first discovered Tuesday afternoon. The device in question looked to be an old mortar.

The bomb was safely disposed of by the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) after it was identified as a 60mm high-explosive mortar.

The recycling center handles rock, dirt, concrete, and asphalt, and it hasn’t been determined when the bomb made its way to the center, but police are asking the public to avoid handling bombs themselves and to contact the department for assistance.
