Launching in 2024, international chemical producer BASF will be launching a new battery-recycling black-mass plant in East Germany.
The plan is expected to create 30 new production jobs and have an annual processing capacity of 15,000 tons of electric vehicle batteries and production scrap. From these batteries, the facility will create "black-mass," which can then be used to produce cathode active materials. Dr. Peter Schumacher, president of the catalysts division at BASF, calls this " the next step to establish the full battery recycling value chain at BASF."
