How Super Bowl LIV’s Waste was Turned into Renewable Electricity

Michael Fernandez has resigned as the director of Miami-Dade Solid Waste District.

In a letter to officials, he stressed urgency in seeking landfill alternatives. A fire in February at the county's waste-to-energy facility in Doral, Fla. halted diversion efforts.

Fernandez said the county should "issue a moratorium to stop all development in Miami-Dade County or initiate the plans that were suggested in the past," such as considering landfill expansion.
