Command Packaging, which makes reusable bags, is opening Encore Recycling, a plastics recycling facility in Salinas, Calif.

Vernon, Calif.-based Command Packaging said in a news release the new 200,000-sq.-ft. agricultural plastics recycling operation will begin operations in October.

The facility will be able to recycle more than 100 million pounds of plastic a year. Encore Recycling will partner with growers to collect, wash, and recycle agricultural plastic waste currently being disposed of in landfills. The facility will convert the plastic waste into reusable bags called smarterbags for the California grocery market.
The operation will employ 40 immediately, more than 100 in 2014 and nearly 500 eventually.
