Georgia-based WinCup Inc. has created a new straw called Phade, which is being named as a breakthrough marine biodegradable drinking straw. It has the same feel and user experience of a traditional plastic straw, but derived from canola oil, otherwise known as PHA or polyhydroxyalkanoate, the straw is compostable.

That’s good news because the average plastic straw can take up to 200 years to decompose in a landfill.

Phade is being tested by Dunkin’ and is being rolled out at select stores. In addition, the straw is being used by more than 60 U.S. distributors and is sold at Walmart.
