Plastic is ubiquitous, but less than nine percent of plastic winds up getting recycled.

A large amount of the plastic isn't recycled and it ends up in landfills or burned or in the ocean, where it breaks down into microplastics, gets eaten by fish, and can end up inside humans. A recent study estimated that an average human globally ingests about a credit card's worth of plastic into their system every week.

Comedian John Oliver covered the history of plastics and plastics waste on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Oliver shared with the audience that recycling can feel demoralizing. However, we should continue to recycle because it can still have modest environmental benefits.
