In Britain, a new standard for biodegradable plastic has been published, which outlines that plastic products will have to prove they can break down into harmless wax containing no microplastics.

The British company Polymateria created the benchmark for the new standard. The company has created a formula to evolve plastic items like bottles into a sludge at a specific moment in the product’s life. Once the product’s breakdown begins, which is triggered by sunlight, air and water, most items will decompose into carbon dioxide, water and sludge within two years.
