The north branch of Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River is among 53 waterways across the state to be contaminated by microplastics.

The staggering amount of microplastics found –which are smaller than five millimeters – most likely means that no river, lake or stream is safe from this increasingly common contaminant.

To lessen the amount of microplastics, the state’s Department of Environmental Protection encourages the public to reduce the use of single-use plastics, purchasing products made with recycled materials and properly dispose of plastics.
