New Jersey lawmakers are pushing to reduce single-use plastic waste by proposing a bill requiring restaurants to provide plastic utensils and condiment packets only upon request. Led by Senator Bob Smith, the initiative builds on the state’s recent bans on plastic bags, Styrofoam, and plastic straws.
Smith says that the measure, modeled after existing "skip the stuff" ordinances in cities like Hoboken and Jersey City, aims to minimize unnecessary waste without banning plastic items outright. The proposal is expected to further cut down on plastics in the environment by addressing the over-distribution of disposable items in takeout orders.
