Step 1: Stop Buying Single-use Disposable Plastics

Cities have tremendous buying power with their municipal budgets—let’s harness that buying power to reject single-use disposable plastics. The Post Landfill Action Network has developed a Break Free from Plastics pledge for college campuses that could be a great model for cities as well and mirrors the national bans adopted in both the European Union and Canada. We should challenge our local governments to pledge to stop purchasing single-use disposable plastics—in their offices, cafeterias, meeting rooms, public events, facility buildings, etc.—including:

- Utensils, straws, stirrers

- Foodservice ware (cups, bowls, plates, etc.)

- Clamshells and to-go containers

- Bottled water

- Polystyrene containers

- Condiment packets and individually wrapped items (K-cups, napkins, etc.)

- Plastic bags

- Black plastic foodservice ware (platters, etc.)
