Two years after it was implemented, the plastic bag tax in Fairfax County, Va. has brought in more than $6 million in revenue.
The initiative also removed an estimated 3 million bags out of circulation following the bag tax going into effect in January 2022.
“There are 3 million fewer plastic bags in circulation in Fairfax County since the bag tax was enacted, which 100% shows the intention is working,” said Jeff McKay, Board of Supervisors Chairman.
The five-cent tax applies to disposable plastic bags commonly seen in grocery, convenience, and drug stores. Virginia Law states that the collected revenue must go to specific initiatives aimed at environmental education, pollution mitigation, litter cleanup, and reusable bags for low-income residents.
