Is Chemical Recycling the Fix for Plastic Collection?

Collecting used plastic is imperative for creating a circular economy in the waste industry. Yet, two billion people throughout the world do not have access to proper waste collection services.

Today, only one-third of post-consumer plastic waste is collected for recycling in Europe. The EU has targeted 50 percent of plastic packaging to be recycled by 2025 and 55 percent by 2030.

Some companies are looking at chemical recycling to meet higher recycling goals. Chemical recycling isolates toxic substances in some recycled plastics, making it possible to retrieve raw materials that can be used to manufacture plastics. The process is promising but is not the only solution because it is energy intensive and releases carbon.
