Curbside recycling is coming to Emporia. By summer of 2015, the solid waste department will pick up recycling bins every other week, collecting aluminum, tin, glass, cardboard and plastics 1-7. And it will be free until 2017.
Right now, the solid waste department has enough money in its reserves to pay for the program for at least two years.
The program is voluntary. After 2017, residents will most likely see a trash bill hike of a few dollars — if they choose to participate.
For those who already recycle, the program will be a convenience. Sorting isn’t necessary, and they’ll save regular trips to the recycling center.
