Beginning October 1, Maryland will become the first state in the U.S. to ban the use of foam food containers, such as cups, plates, carryout containers and trays, commonly used for takeout. Several counties within the state have already introduced this ban, including Montgomery and Prince George's counties.

The goal of the ban is to reduce the amount of waste, which is found in our oceans, neighborhoods and among our wildlife.

The state had originally placed a deadline of July 1 for the ban to begin, but due to COVID-19 the date was pushed back. The packaging change comes at a time when the food industry is trying to recover from closed dining rooms and much of their sales are generated from takeout. Businesses can apply for a hardship waiver for up to one year.
