New laws in Washington will have residents separate their organic waste in the coming years.

New laws in Washington will have residents separate their organic waste in the coming years.

Households will need to separate their organic waste from their regular waste starting in 2027. Additionally, in 2030, residents will also need to separate their food waste. These organics measurement laws were passed in 2022 and 2024 to keep the waste out of landfills, reducing the emissions of methane.

"We've known we needed to go in this direction for a while, but there's a lot of things to prep us to do that," said Kirstin Davis from the City of Spokane. "It hopefully just raises awareness for people to be more mindful of how they are diverting their waste."
