N.D. Landfill Disposals Nearly Double Since Start of Oil Boom

North Dakota’s oil boom brought explosive growth to nearly every area of the Bakken, including record amounts of garbage coming into its landfills.

According to data from the North Dakota Department of Health, annual disposal of municipal garbage to the Dickinson Landfill nearly doubled from 2006 to 2014, rising from more than 24,600 to around 49,100 tons of trash.

Steve Tillotson, assistant director of the Department of Health’s Division of Waste Management, said Oil Patch landfills like Dickinson’s have seen “quite a change in the amounts and types of waste” they’ve received over the past few years because of rapid economic expansion.
