Chemung County Landfill in Chemung, N.Y., is expecting a waste capacity increase via a pending permit, but a decline in the amount of waste being generated and a lease change are putting that increase on hold.
The new permit will increase the landfill’s waste capacity from 180 thousand tons to 417 thousand tons per year, and the new lease has reduced Casella Waste Systems’ annual payment from $3 million to approximately $2.5 million.

There is good news for opponents of having more garbage come into the Chemung County Landfill.
There won't be an increase in the amount waste coming in each year to the Chemung County Landfill any time soon.
Deputy County Executive Mike Krusen says it's not because of a hold up in the state issuing a permit for the increase. Their approval is expected any day now.
