'Most Troubled' Ky. Landfill Gets Downsized

A mega-dump fed by East Coast trash trains carrying smelly garbage and sewage sludge will get dramatically downsized under an agreement reached Tuesday after a citizens group had sued local and state officials and the Boyd County landfill's operators.

"It's a good day for the residents of Boyd County," said Kenny Messer, an Ashland area residents and board member of Citizens of Boyd County Environmental Coalition, Inc., which had been pressing for more than a year to get the dump shut down and trains stopped.

While the Boyd Circuit Court agreed the order of judgement allows River Cities Disposal LLC to stay in business at the controversial Big Run Landfill, the outcome preserves tax revenue and local jobs while removing the biggest sources of numerous odor and operational complaints, said Sean Borst, another CBCEC board member.
