Louisiana Officials: Fire at Landfill Larger than Expected

A fire burning for more than half a decade is much larger than state officials expected and no one knows just how long it will take to put out.

Archie Tisby says, “It’s just really hurting the neighborhood."

The Harrelson Landfill is described as a toxic wasteland.

“The smell is just horrendous sometimes."

Tisby lives right next door to it.

“It's like you never smelled before. Like a rotten egg. It stinks." 

Dozens filled the Martin Luther King Neighborhood Association's meeting room for answers. Shreveport mayor Cedric Glover organized the meeting to update residents on the progress of closing the landfill.
